A wedding ring is the one of the most amazing expressions of love and togetherness. It epitomizes the everlasting commitment in a relationship and an unspoken promise of fidelity. It represents the wonderful memories of the cherished moments spent together and at the same time it symbolizes the dreams & hopes of a beautiful life ahead. However, other than a romantic significance, a ring can also have social, emotional and monetary connotations.

An exchange of ring finds a place and reference in most cultures and religions as an important ceremony. This tradition finds it origin in ancient Egypt; they considered the unending circle of the ring as a depiction of eternal love. Like a circle has no beginning or end, such are the traits of love. In Rome, the custom was to exchange iron rings as a sign of commitment to one another. In some cultures, the ring is worn on the left hand while some believe it should be placed on the right hand. In the olden days, a ring often was seen as a measure of wealth of the bride & groom’s families.

There continue to be variations across cultures and a number of superstitions are attached to it. Like, some believe the ring should always be in gold else it brings bad luck to the couple. Also, some say that the ring should be worn on third finger of the left hand as the vein of this finger goes directly to the heart. Until much recently, it was only the women who adorned a wedding ring on their fingers. Nowadays, it has become customary and fashionable for men to wear a wedding ring.

This ring holds a different meaning for different people. There are people who do not believe in the concept of wedding rings and merely consider it as a social obligation. Also, there are some, who do not like to flaunt their ring in public, as they do not wish to reveal their marital status to all. However, for most of us a wedding ring is a long-lasting expression of the blessed bliss in our lives.
